The Hispanic/Latino Coalition of Louisville is a broad-based group of public and private organizations and individuals who embrace the contributions and respond to the concerns of our growing Hispanic/Latino population. It is an important part of our mission to collectively express concern when the human rights of our Hispanic/Latino population are being threatened.

Our group stands solidly behind our “People Not Profiles” Campaign because it points out the positive attributes we, who have walked in the shoes of immigrants, have to offer our beloved community. Just as we have overcome adversity to be able to be on an equal basis with the many citizens of the U.S. we, as longstanding fellow citizens of the Americas, are calling out to our neighbors to show compassion and treat all of us as fairly and equally as we would treat our neighbors in North America.

The unjust Arizona law, SB1070, is set to go into effect on Thursday, July 29, 2010, and consequently has caused us to unite in a solidarity movement on behalf of people facing anti-immigrant attacks in Arizona. We have organized ourselves through our “People Not Profiles” Campaign in order to build a community here in Kentucky that says NO to Arizona’s
unconstitutional law and “NO to Hate” directed at ANYONE.

JUDITH FRIEDRICH

BARRIERS FOR LATINA WOMEN TO ACCESS HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

PURPOSE: Investigation of social indicators for health care access and underlying structures

INDICATORS: Infrastructure, immigration and health policy, health insurance coverage,
structure of medical profession and education, culture and language

UNDERLYING STRUCTURES: Race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, citizenship
(intersecting systems of domination)

METHODOLOGIES: Community mapping, community survey, focus groups/interviews

COMMUNITY MAPPING

RESULTS

High dispersion of Latina population in Jefferson County; higher concentration in the center
of Jefferson County

Latinas, experiencing poverty, are more spread out than African American and White
females, and have higher proportions in concentrated areas compared to male counterparts
Language problems (compared to poverty) seemed to be more prevalent for Latinas than
Latinos

Healthcare and other social services are more located in North, Northwest, and Southwestern
part of Jefferson County, less in the Eastern areas

Metro Council Districts 2, 9, 11, and 21 demonstrate areas where poor Latinas live who also
have language problems

Higher proportions of census tracts populating Latinas were located further away from
Family Health Centers, independent from density, than census tracts with African American
or White women; higher concentrated census tracts seemed to be closer to hospitals than
lower concentrated ones

This is what we are looking for: an individual or a group of individuals to implement our Latino Children’s Reading Enrichment Curriculum. This would involve reading stories to children in English and in Spanish and then engaging these children in auxiliary activities to reinforce the material read (both English and Spanish). These activities could include drawing, sculpting, drama, no bake cooking, etc. Our purpose is to reinforce reading and language skills in preschoolers in order to increase success in early education. The curriculum is already created and the author of the curriculum has agreed to provide training to those who implement the program.

The children participating in the program are the children of our ESL students who attend class Monday and Wednesdays from 9:30 – 12:30 and Saturdays 2 – 4:30. Our location is John Knox Presbyterian Church on Westport Road.

Interested individuals would not have to commit to every day, although consistency would be preferable for the good of the children. We are very open to students interested in internship opportunities and if a grant is awarded a stipend may be possible.

Anyone interested may contact me using the information below.
