Keynote Speakers:

“Big Sky Dream” Mentors: College/University Students from Lexington, Kentucky speaking about how to engage and encourage Chicano/Latino youth through relevant programming and cultural/historical reconnections.

Sylvia Mendez: Daughter of Gonzalo and Felicita Mendez who fought and won a desegregation case against the Westminster School District in 1947. The case though not well know in U.S. History was integral for the national desegregation movement. The NAACP and Thurgood Marshall supported/assisted the case. Mendez v. Westminster set precedent for Brown vs. Board of Education.

Bobby Verdugo: Original L. A. School Blowout Student/Organizer. The 1968 Blowouts occurred in L.A. in order to protest school inequalities, inhumane school conditions, and lack of rigorous course offering in neighborhood, predominately Latino/Hispanic schools. Mr. Verdugo is currently a social worker in L.A. Dos Vatos Productions: Currently based in Tucson Arizona, Dos Vatos will be returning to Kentucky to present their documentary “Beyond the Border” along with the star of the documentary Marcelo. “Beyond the Border” follows the story of Marcelo during his travels to the United States, the aspirations of his family for a better life and education and the trials/obstacles they face.
